Cultural life is rich and varied in Yerevan with influences of the clashing Ottoman, Persian and Russian empires and being the first country in the world to adopt Christianity!
In a 17th century earthquake, much of the city was destroyed leaving only a few remnants of old Erivan still standing. Today, the city is positioned with a strong influence from the Soviet era with modern construction following architect Alexander Tamanyan's plan to create the perfect city. Yerevan was once called the Pink City, after the pink stone used in many of the historical buildings. It's possible to stay in these historical hotels located in Yerevan's city centre, simply by going to our Yerevan Hotels booking portal!
You may be surprised to know that in 301 AD, Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion. Armenians are Apostolic Christians and have their own version of the Catholic Pope. They refer to their religious leader as Catholicos. Yerevan has thousands of monasteries and churches, making for the perfect city-break-- take a look at our Yerevan Tours for some inspiration!
If you climb up the Cascade of Yerevan to the monument which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Soviet Armenia in Haghtanak Park, you can see the entire city spread out below. If it is a cloudless day, you can see the holy mountain of the Armenians, Mount Ararat, which is on Turkish ground. The heart of Yerevan is the Republic Square with its National Gallery and the Museum of the Middle East. From this square, Hyusisayin Poghota, the central boulevard, leads to the Opera Square and Opera House in the northern central parts of the city. From the busy Mesrop Mashtots Poghota road you will see the 23 metre high Statue of Mother Armenia, on top of the surrounding hills.
It is a good idea to use Yerevan as your base from which to explore central Armenia, as you won't have to cover long distances on your travels and Yerevan transportation options are readily available. Just like many of the former Soviet cities, Yerevan is built on a grid pattern. Many of the streets are like wide boulevards, lined with trees, and huge bleak buildings. You can never really lose your way in the city because the outskirts of central Yerevan are traversed by three ring roads, and the grid pattern is extremely easy to follow. What's more, most of the central areas are on the lowest elevation. Should you happen to lose your way, take a look at our interactive Yerevan map to get you back on track.
