Yerevan Transportation Guide

With an increasing number of visitors to the city, Yerevan has increased the number of transportation means available for travellers to use making getting to Yerevan so much easier.

Getting to Yerevan

By plane

Yerevan's main airport is the Zvartnots International Airport handles heavy air traffic. It is the most important airport for domestic and international travel in the country The airport has modern facilities such as currency exchange services, care for the disabled, child services, and so on. Recently, with the opening of the new terminal, you will enjoy greater comfort, excellent service, and additional facilities like child care, and much more. And if you urgently want to send someone an important email, you can take advantage of free WiFi access at the departure terminal. The airport is 14 km from Yerevan, and the best way to get to the city is in a taxi. A taxi ride from the airport to the city will cost anything from AMD 3000 to 5000 (USD 10-20) depending on the direction you're heading. You will be required to pay 10000 AMD (30 USD) as departure air tax when you leave Armenia from Zvartnots International Airport.

The second airport in Yerevan is the Erebuni Airport, which is mainly used for military purposes.

By train

You can catch an overnight train from Tbilisi, in Georgia. Although taking the train is very cheap, and the seating is quite comfortable, it is a slow journey, so bringing along your own food and drink makes a lot of sense. You can buy a ticket for a four-person coupe, or choose to travel by the more expensive two-person SV (ehs-veh) class.

By car

You can choose to travel to Armenia by road via Georgia or Iran; both these starting points have a few border crossings to traverse.

By bus

You can travel to Yerevan by bus from Tbilisi in Georgia. The fare costs 15 lari and the journey takes about 12 hours. The more expensive option is a minibus at about 30 lari, but you'll reach Yerevan faster, in about 6 hours.

Getting around Yerevan

Travelling around the city is very easy. The centre of the city is a very compact area and since distances are short, you can just walk around Yereven. If you want to get around town in the quickest way possible, take the metro which began operation in the 1980s, and is quite modern and dependable. Minibuses in Yerevan are becoming more prevalent with more than a hundred in operation and are another way to get about the city. You cold also hire a taxi to take you around.

On foot

While walking around the small and compact city centre is easy and convenient, watch out for potholes, construction sites, and ruthless drivers. 

By metro

Taking the Yerevan metro is the quickest and cheapest way to get around Yerevan. The metro system is reliable and quite modern, having been built in the early 1980s. However, it all depends on where you are heading to in the city, for the metro only has one line (with an appended station), and therefore, destinations are limited. The train interior with its corridors lit up with chandeliers reminds one of the old Soviet nations. Most of the metro stations underwent name changes after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Independence of the Republic of Armenia.

By minibus

More than a hundred minibus routes criss-cross the city and lead to the suburbs and beyond to places like Georgia and Karabagh. The Armenians refer to the minibus as "marshrutka", pronounced mahrsh-root-kah. The minibuses are a cheap way to travel around Yerevan, but often overcrowded. During rush hour it's not easy to find a seat, and you might find that you have to stand all the way to your destination.

By bus or trolleybus

Perhaps a better option for transport in Yerevan is the bus or the trolleybus. There are a few trolley lines and buses operated by "Yergortrans." Tickets are very cheap and the vehicles are not too crowded. You need to pay only when you are about to get off.

By taxi

Taxis are plentiful throughout the city, and a ride downtown should not cost you more than 1500 dram (US$3-4), although sometimes cab drivers do try to get more cash out of foreigners. You can rent a car and driver for a daytrip outside Yerevan for as little as $20 plus gas.
